# Payroll settings

> Set up pay schedules, pay types, your signatory and payroll automations

> [!NOTE]
>
> Payroll and HR automations and balance migration may not be available for your company yet.

**Settings** > **Payroll** opens **Payroll settings**. Company Admins, HR Admins and Owners can use it once your company has finished company onboarding. Until payroll is set up, the page shows **Payroll is not set up yet**.

Tax settings are covered in [Payroll taxes](/payroll/taxes), and **Benefits deductions** in [Deductions](/payroll/deductions). The rest of the page is below.

## General settings

| Setting | What it's for |
| - | - |
| **Custom pay types** | Pay types you add to payroll, with a **Name**, **Description**, **Category** and **Withholding** |
| **Hourly pay types** | Pay types for hourly work, each with a rate that multiplies an employee's base hourly rate |
| **Pay schedules** | How often and when your employees get paid |
| **Authorized signatory** | Who signs tax filings, benefits forms and compliance documents for your company |

**Custom pay types**, **Hourly pay types** and **Pay schedules** each have **Add new**. Use a row's menu to **Edit** an item, or to **Delete** a custom or hourly pay type.

### Custom pay types

A custom pay type's **Category** decides how it's taxed. A **Pre-tax earning** is included in gross wages and subject to tax withholding, like a bonus. If your company has them, you can also choose **Post-tax earning**, which is added after taxes like a reimbursement, or **Fringe benefit**, which is added to taxable wages for FICA and Medicare only. If your company has recurring pay types, you can mark one **Recurring** and add it to an employee from their profile with **Add recurring pay type**.

### Pay schedules

Only Company Admins and HR Admins can open **Pay schedules**. Each schedule shows its **Name**, **Frequency**, **Payday** and **Status**. When you add one, you choose how often employees get paid, their first payday and their first pay period.

* Turn on **Autopilot** to have Every submit payroll for you. A pay run on autopilot shows an **Autopilot** badge in [Pay runs](/payroll/overview).
* You can't change an existing schedule's frequency or payday. To change them, create a new schedule.
* Turn off **Enable pay schedule** to stop paying people through it.

### Authorized signatory

Choose a trusted person under **Choose person**. They sign your payroll tax filings, benefits enrollment and carrier forms, and compliance documents, and none of those can be submitted without a signatory. If your signatory leaves the company, the page warns you to choose a replacement.

## Payroll and HR automations

If your company has them, the top of the page lists **Payroll and HR automations** you can turn on or off:

| Automation | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Hiring** | Checks each new hire for state registrations, policies and compliance requirements |
| **Termination** | Surfaces final-paycheck deadlines and payroll guidance for each termination |
| **Payroll** | Looks for payroll errors and compliance issues before you run payroll |

## Import payroll balances

If you're moving to Every from another payroll provider, select **People** > **Migrate balances** to import prior wage, tax and benefit balances for one quarter.

**1. Get started**

Enter the quarter details, such as the **Year**, **Quarter** and **Source system**, then download the template, fill it in and upload it.

**2. Review**

Check which rows are ready to import and which have potential issues.

**3. Submit**

Select **Submit balances**.
