# Open a bank account

> Apply for an Every business checking account for your existing company, and follow the review on Home

![The bank application at Upload documents, with its steps beside it and the first document chosen.](https://mintcdn.com/every-a2724ddc/k5maP8xPODHl5ToY/images/illustrations/admins-getting-started-open-a-bank-account-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=k5maP8xPODHl5ToY\&q=85\&s=c5303721a478d9f277c104ee4a3c7b56)

The bank application is how your company applies for its Every business checking account, and Every takes you to it after you sign up. For a company that already exists, it has five steps: **Company Details**, **Owner Details**, **Ownership Structure**, **Upload documents** and **Confirm & submit**.

## Before you begin

Company Admins and Bookkeepers can fill in the bank application, and you're a Company Admin once you sign up. You stay in the application until you submit it. Every saves your answers as you go, so you can leave and finish later.

Have these ready

* Your company's FEIN (Employer Identification Number: the 9-digit number the IRS gives a business to identify it for taxes), state of incorporation and incorporation date
* A physical U.S. address for your company
* Your SSN (Social Security number: the 9-digit number the U.S. Social Security Administration gives a person), or your passport number if you're a foreign person
* A passport, driver's license or other government-issued photo ID, to verify your identity
* For each other person who owns 25% or more of the company: their legal name, contact details, date of birth, home address and SSN or passport number, plus a government-issued photo ID that hasn't expired
* For each other owner who uses a passport: their annual income and source of income
* A document that proves your company was formed, and an IRS letter or tax return that shows your EIN

If your company isn't incorporated yet, under **Have you incorporated yet?**, choose **No** instead. Every incorporates the company, then opens its bank account (see [Incorporate your company](https://every.help/admins/getting-started/incorporate-your-company.md)).

## Start the application

**Company Details** asks about your company and how you'll use the account.

**1. Confirm that your company exists**

Under **Have you incorporated yet?**, choose **Yes** (Yes, I already have a company).

**2. Optional: choose the products you want**

Under **What products are you interested in?**, select the ones you want. If you select **HR, Payroll, and Benefits**, also choose your company size.

**3. Enter your company information**

Under **Company information**, choose your company's type, state of incorporation, incorporation date and industry, and enter its legal name, FEIN, website, description and phone number. Fill in **DBA name (optional)** if your business operates under another name.

**4. Answer the compliance questions**

Under **Compliance information**, say what the account is for, where your funds come from, your expected monthly volume, the countries you operate in, whether a regulator oversees your business, what you do in the U.S. and where you and your owners live.

**5. Enter your legal business address**

Under **Legal business address**, enter a physical U.S. address. The field says: "Virtual addresses are not accepted. If no one is located in the United States, you may use your Registered Agent's address." A PO box isn't accepted either.

**6. Continue**

Select **Next**.

The step says "Unfortunately we aren't able to support your business" for an industry Every doesn't support, for cryptocurrency activity as your source of funds and when your countries leave out the United States.

![The bank application at Company Details, with Yes chosen under Have you incorporated yet? and its five steps beside it.](https://mintcdn.com/every-a2724ddc/qvvudeZxc26V6Klz/images/screens/admins-getting-started-open-a-bank-account-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=qvvudeZxc26V6Klz\&q=85\&s=44b0efdc96c42d94f8348c457416eb67)

## Add your owners

**Owner Details** is about you. **Ownership Structure** lists the people who own 25% or more of the company.

### Enter your details

**1. Answer the ownership question**

Under **Are you a 25% or greater owner of this company?**, choose **Yes** or **No**. If you choose **Yes**, enter your **Ownership percentage**.

**2. Enter your personal details**

Choose your **Job title** and **Nationality**, and enter your **Date of birth**. You must be at least 16.

**3. Enter your home address**

Under **Owner address**, enter a physical address that you can verify with a utility bill or lease.

**4. Enter your SSN or passport number**

In **ID verification type**, choose **SSN (U.S only)** or **Passport Number (if Foreign Person)**, then enter the number. For a passport, also choose the **Passport country of issuance**.

**5. Verify your identity**

In the **ID Verification** card, select **Get started** and follow the steps with your passport, driver's license or other government-issued photo ID.

**6. Continue**

Select **Next**. It stays unavailable until your identity is verified.

If the identity check fails, Every's team reviews your account, and the application shows **Review in progress** while they do.

![Owner Details, asking whether you own 25% or more, then your ownership percentage, job title, nationality and birth date.](https://mintcdn.com/every-a2724ddc/lWATgPF1EqKKYfej/images/screens/admins-getting-started-open-a-bank-account-owner-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=lWATgPF1EqKKYfej\&q=85\&s=2727211d5edfa411d7e09a47ca4eee16)

### Add the other owners

On **Ownership Structure**, you're listed already if you said you own 25% or more. Add each other person who owns 25% or more of the company. Don't add yourself, and don't add investors.

**1. Open the owner form**

Select **Add new** → **Add owner**.

**2. Enter the owner's details**

Enter their legal name, date of birth, home address, work email address and phone number, and choose their nationality and job title. Then enter their **Ownership percentage**, which must be at least 25%.

**3. Enter their SSN or passport number**

In **ID verification type**, choose SSN or passport and enter the number. With a passport, also choose their **Annual income** and **Source of income**.

**4. Add their photo ID**

Under **ID Verification**, choose the **Document type** and its issue and expiration dates. Then upload the **Front of the document**. For anything but a passport, also upload the **Back of the document**.

**5. Save the owner**

Select **Add owner**, then repeat for each other owner.

**6. Continue**

Select **Next**.

To continue, the application needs at least one current owner with 25% or more: you, or someone you add. The percentages can't add up to more than 100%.

> [!NOTE]
>
> When you submit, Every gives each owner you add the Company Admin and Employee roles in your company, unless their **Job title** is **I'm not an employee**.

## Upload documents

**Upload documents** asks for two documents, each a .jpeg, .png or .pdf file.

**1. Upload your formation document**

Under **Company formation document**, in **Choose document**, choose a document that proves your company was formally established, such as your **Certificate of Incorporation**, **Articles of Organization** or **LLC Operating Agreement**. Then upload it in **Upload document**.

**2. Upload your EIN document**

Under **IRS letter or tax return**, choose a document that includes your EIN, such as your **IRS Federal EIN Letter (IRS Form CP 575 or IRS 147c)**, and upload it.

**3. Continue**

Select **Next**.

![Upload documents, with a company formation document and an IRS letter chosen, each with its own upload area.](https://mintcdn.com/every-a2724ddc/qvvudeZxc26V6Klz/images/screens/admins-getting-started-open-a-bank-account-documents-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=qvvudeZxc26V6Klz\&q=85\&s=0211454955c186f1c1a073d3d642eb14)

## Review and submit

The last step, **Confirm & submit**, is titled **Review & submit** on the screen.

**1. Check your details**

On **Review & submit**, check your **Company name**, **Owners**, **FEIN** and **Address** under **Open Every account**.

**2. Accept the terms**

Under **Terms & conditions**, select all eight checkboxes. They include the deposit account and debit card agreements. One says: "Every is not a bank. Banking services provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC."

**3. Submit**

Select **Confirm & submit**.

If Every can't accept the application, it shows **Onboarding failed** with the reason, such as an owner who is "already associated with another Every account." Select **Back** to return to the application.

## What happens next

After you submit, a confirmation screen says your application "is Pending Review, which takes 3-4 business days," and that Every will email you when it's approved or if it needs more documents. Select **Done** to go to **Home**. You can't change a submitted application.

Company Admins can follow the review on **Home**, under **Things to do**:

| What **Home** shows | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Bank application under review**, with **We are reviewing your bank application** | You've submitted your application, and it isn't approved |
| **We need more documents for your application** | Your application needs more documents. Select it to open the form and send them |
| **Your bank account is ready, add funds now** | Your account is open. Select it to add money, or select **Dismiss** |

When your application is approved, Every opens your checking account and your company finishes onboarding. Company Admins and Bookkeepers then see **Banking** in the sidebar, with your new account (see [Checking account](https://every.help/admins/banking/overview.md)). To add money later, Company Admins go to **Banking** → **Checking account** (**Overview** when the **Banking** menu has no **Credit card** item) and select **Move money** → **Add funds** (see [Move money](https://every.help/admins/banking/payments.md#add-funds)).

![Add funds to Every, open over Banking, with three ways to add money: a wire, a bank transfer or a check deposit.](https://mintcdn.com/every-a2724ddc/qvvudeZxc26V6Klz/images/screens/admins-getting-started-open-a-bank-account-add-funds-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=qvvudeZxc26V6Klz\&q=85\&s=bab0c5408e643a3ace5dac8ddc3e65c4)

## Ask about your application

Email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io) with questions about your bank application, including a declined application or a correction to one you've submitted.

## Agent reference

**Where:** The bank application, which Every opens for Company Admins and Bookkeepers after sign-up, until it's submitted. For a company that already exists, its steps are **Company Details**, **Owner Details**, **Ownership Structure**, **Upload documents** and **Confirm & submit**, and the last step's screen is titled **Review & submit**. A company that Every incorporates follows other steps; see [Incorporate your company](https://every.help/admins/getting-started/incorporate-your-company.md).

**Who:** Company Admins and Bookkeepers can open and fill in the bank application, and other roles can't open it. The person who signs up for Every is a Company Admin and an Employee of the new company. Company Admins follow the review on **Home**.

### Facts

#### The application

* After sign-up, Company Admins and Bookkeepers stay in the bank application until it's submitted.
* A submitted bank application can't be changed.
* Every saves the bank application's answers as they're entered. After a page reload, the bank application opens at **Company Details** with the saved answers.
* In the bank application, **Next** checks the step's answers. When one is missing or wrong, Every says "Some information is missing or incorrect." and highlights the fields.
* The confirmation screen after **Confirm & submit** says "If you have further questions, email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io)." For questions, email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io).

#### Company Details

* **Company Details** opens with the **Patriot Act Disclosure**, which says federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.
* On **Company Details**, **Have you incorporated yet?** offers **Yes** (Yes, I already have a company) and **No** (No, I would like to incorporate one). Choosing **No** switches the bank application to the incorporation steps: after **Owner Details** and **Ownership Structure** come **Roles & board**, **Review documents** and **Confirm & submit**.
* With **Yes** to **Have you incorporated yet?**, **Company Details** asks **What products are you interested in?**, with the options **Banking, Cards and Treasury**, **HR, Payroll, and Benefits** and **Taxes and Bookkeeping**. The question is optional.
* Selecting **HR, Payroll, and Benefits** on **Company Details** adds **Choose your company size**, which is then required. Its options are 0-10, 11-25, 26-100, 101-250 and 250+.
* **Schedule a demo** on **Company Details** has a **Book a demo** button, to "Book a demo with our team and see how Every fits your back office."
* **Company information** on **Company Details** asks for **Company name**, **Company type**, **DBA name (optional)**, **Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)**, **State of Incorporation**, **Incorporation date**, **Industry**, **Website**, **Company description** and **Company phone number**.
* **Company type** on **Company Details** lists **LLC**, **Corporation** and **Partnership**. For a company that already exists, LLCs, corporations and partnerships can all apply.
* **DBA name (optional)** on **Company Details** is for a business that operates under a fictitious business name, and takes up to 50 characters.
* **Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)** on **Company Details** must be 9 digits. Otherwise Every says "FEIN must be 9 digits" or "FEIN is not valid".
* **Incorporation date** on **Company Details** can't be in the future.
* **Website** on **Company Details** must be a web address. The field says a company without a website can enter [https://google.com](https://google.com).
* **Company description** on **Company Details** asks for one clear sentence and takes up to 255 characters.
* **Compliance information** on **Company Details** asks for **Primary purpose of this account**, **Primary source of funds for your business**, **Expected monthly transaction volume for this account**, **Choose the countries where your business operates**, **Business regulated by any government authority or financial regulator**, **Nature of your U.S. operations** and **Enter the location for you and any owners who hold more than 25 percent ownership**.
* Some answers to **Primary purpose of this account**, **Primary source of funds for your business** and **Expected monthly transaction volume for this account** on **Company Details** add a required field that asks for more detail.
* Answering **Yes** to **Business regulated by any government authority or financial regulator** on **Company Details** adds **Please provide the name of your regulator**, which is then required.
* **Nature of your U.S. operations** on **Company Details** offers **Employees**, **Customers**, **Physical office or facility** and **Banking relationships**, and needs at least one.
* **Enter the location for you and any owners who hold more than 25 percent ownership** on **Company Details** offers **All owners (including me) are living in the U.S.**, **All owners (including me) are living outside the U.S.** and a mix of the two.
* **Legal business address** on **Company Details** asks for a physical U.S. address. Its note says: "Enter a physical United States address. If you do not have an office, use your home address. Virtual addresses are not accepted. If no one is located in the United States, you may use your Registered Agent's address."
* A **Legal business address** on **Company Details** that is a PO box is refused with "Address cannot be a PO BOX".
* On **Company Details**, Every can't support some industries. Choosing one as **Industry** shows "Unfortunately we aren't able to support your business".
* On **Company Details**, Every also says it isn't able to support the business when **Primary source of funds for your business** is **Cryptocurrency related activity**, or when **Choose the countries where your business operates** leaves out the United States.

#### Owner Details

* **Owner Details** is about the person filling in the bank application, and its screen is titled "Details for" and their first name.
* On **Owner Details**, **Are you a 25% or greater owner of this company?** takes **Yes** or **No**. With **Yes**, **Ownership percentage** asks for the applicant's share.
* **Owner Details** also asks for **Job title**, **Nationality**, **Date of birth**, **Owner address** and **ID verification type**, and shows the applicant's **Email address** read-only.
* The applicant on **Owner Details** and each owner added on **Ownership Structure** must be at least 16 years old.
* **Owner address** on **Owner Details** asks for a physical address that can be verified with a utility bill or lease.
* Choosing **Other** as the country of an address on **Owner Details** or **Ownership Structure** shows a message asking you to find another bank.
* **ID verification type** on **Owner Details** offers **SSN (U.S only)** and **Passport Number (if Foreign Person)**. A passport also needs **Passport country of issuance**, and an SSN is entered as ###-##-####.
* The **ID Verification** card on **Owner Details** says "We're required to verify your identity as part of our compliance process." and lists **Passport**, **Drivers license** and **Other government-issued photo IDs**. **Get started** starts the verification, and the button reads **Verification completed** when it's done.
* **Next** on **Owner Details** stays unavailable until the identity verification is complete.
* When the identity verification on **Owner Details** fails, the bank application shows **Review in progress** while Every's team reviews the account, with **Log out** and **Refresh the page**. The screen says Every's team will notify the person once the review is complete, and "This process may take 2-3 business days."
* When Every's team approves the account after a failed identity verification, **Owner Details** doesn't ask for the identity verification again.

#### Ownership Structure

* **Ownership Structure** asks for the people who own 25% or more of the company, needs at least one current owner to continue and says "Do not add investors here."
* On **Ownership Structure**, **Add new** → **Add owner** opens the owner form. For a company that already exists, **Add owner** is the only item; stockholders and future founders are only for companies Every incorporates.
* The owners table on **Ownership Structure** has the columns **Name**, **Type** and **Allocated percentage**. An applicant who answered **Yes** to the 25% question on **Owner Details** is listed and marked You. Each added owner can be edited or removed. The owner form on **Ownership Structure** uses **Add owner** for a new owner and **Save changes** when editing an owner.
* The **Add owner** form on **Ownership Structure** asks for **First name** and **Last name** (the legal name), **Nationality**, **Date of birth**, **Job title**, the home address, **Work email address**, **Phone number**, **Ownership percentage** and **ID verification type**. The added owner's home address must be one they can verify with a utility bill or lease.
* On **Ownership Structure**, an added owner's **Ownership percentage** must be at least 25%, and the percentages together can't add up to more than 100%.
* On **Ownership Structure**, an added owner who uses a passport also needs **Annual income** and **Source of income**.
* The **ID Verification** section of the **Add owner** form asks for the **Document type**, the **Issue date**, the **Expiration date** and the **Front of the document**. It also asks for the **Back of the document**, except for a passport. **Document type** offers **Driver's License**, **Passport**, **State ID**, **Visa** and **Green Card**, and the ID must be a government-issued photo ID that hasn't expired.
* ID images for an owner added on **Ownership Structure** can be .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .pdf, .doc or .docx files.
* **Next** on **Ownership Structure** needs at least one current owner with 25% or more: the applicant or an added owner. Otherwise Every says "Add at least one current owner who owns 25% or more of the company before continuing."
* When the bank application is submitted, Every gives each owner added on **Ownership Structure** the Company Admin and Employee roles in the company, except owners whose **Job title** is **I'm not an employee**.

#### Upload documents

* **Upload documents** has two required sections, **Company formation document** and **IRS letter or tax return**, each with **Choose document** and **Upload document**.
* **Company formation document** on **Upload documents** asks for a document that proves the company was formally established. Its options are **Certificate of Incorporation**, **Articles of Incorporation**, **Partnership Agreement**, **Articles of Organization**, **Corporate Resolutions**, **LLC Operating Agreement**, **Certificate of Assumed Name**, **Certificate of Formation**, **Trust Agreement** and **Organization Documents**.
* **IRS letter or tax return** on **Upload documents** asks for a letter or tax return that includes the company's Employer Identification Number (EIN). Its options are **IRS Federal EIN Letter (IRS Form CP 575 or IRS 147c)**, **Screenshot of IRS website with your EIN on it** and **Filed Tax Return**.
* Each upload on **Upload documents** takes a .jpeg, .png or .pdf file.

#### Review & submit

* **Review & submit** shows the **Open Every account** card with **Company name**, **Owners**, **FEIN** (masked to its last 4 digits) and **Address**. **Owners** lists the added owners, and the applicant when they're an owner.
* **Terms & conditions** on **Review & submit** has eight checkboxes, and Every takes **Confirm & submit** only with all eight selected.
* The eight checkboxes on **Review & submit** cover Every's legal agreements, the **Every Electronic Communications Agreement**, the **Every Business Deposit Account Agreement**, the **Every VISA Debit Cardholder Agreement**, opening a brokerage account and accepting its agreements, a taxpayer certification, a banking disclosure and the terms for payment and foreign currency exchange services.
* The banking disclosure on **Review & submit** says "Every is not a bank. Banking services provided by Thread Bank, Member FDIC." It also says Thread Bank issues the Every Business Visa Debit Card.
* When Every can't accept a submitted bank application, it shows **Onboarding failed** with the reason and a **Back** button. Reasons include "You should not add yourself as an owner. You should only add the other cofounders in the section.", an owner who is "already associated with another Every account.", "You inputted the same SSN/Passport number for two different owners." and "You must add at least one current owner who owns 25% or more of the company before submitting your application." For a duplicate entry, the application asks you to list each person once among officers or owners.

#### After you submit

* After **Confirm & submit**, Every marks the bank application submitted and shows **Bank application submitted!**. The screen says: "Your application has been submitted and is Pending Review, which takes 3-4 business days. We will email you when it is approved or if we need more documentation to open an account." **Done** opens **Home**.
* Company Admins see the bank application's progress on **Home**, under **Things to do**.
* While a submitted bank application isn't approved, **Home** shows **Bank application under review**, tagged **Under review**, with **We are reviewing your bank application**.
* When the bank needs more documents from the company, **Home** shows **We need more documents for your application**, tagged **Due now**, and selecting it opens the application's form for sending them. That to-do clears when the application is approved.
* When the bank application is approved, Every opens the company's checking account, and the company finishes onboarding.
* After approval, **Home** shows **Your bank account is ready, add funds now**, tagged **Approved**. Selecting it opens **Add funds to Every**, and **Dismiss** clears it.
* After the company finishes onboarding, the sidebar shows **Banking** to Company Admins and Bookkeepers. Its first item is **Checking account**, or **Overview** when the **Banking** menu has no **Credit card** item. See [Checking account](https://every.help/admins/banking/overview.md).
* Company Admins add money later with **Move money** → **Add funds** on **Banking** → **Checking account** (**Overview** when the **Banking** menu has no **Credit card** item). Only Company Admins see **Add funds** there. See [Move money](https://every.help/admins/banking/payments.md#add-funds).
